Conservation Project Backed by Kerala State Biodiversity Board The plantation is part of an endangered tree conservation project led by St. Thomas College. The project received financial support from the Kerala State Biodiversity Board. It focuses on protecting tree species that face extinction in Kerala’s fragile ecosystems. Syzygium Palghatense: One of Kerala’s Rarest Tree Species Syzygium palghatense is among the most critically endangered tree species in Kerala. It is found only in Palakkad district.Fewer than twenty trees exist in the entire state. These trees usually grow above 1,000 meters above sea level.Their fruits taste similar to njaval (jamun). However, habitat loss has pushed them to the edge of extinction. First-Ever Cultivation in Kerala’s Low-Lying Plains This plantation marks a historic moment in Kerala’s biodiversity efforts.Syzygium palghatense has never before been cultivated in lowland areas.Earlier, it existed only in the Parambikulam–Nelliyampathy hill ranges. Now, the saplings will grow at Kaniyamthuruthu Pachathuruthu in Elavally Panchayat, Thrissur. This experiment could open new paths for conservation outside forest regions. Syzygium Chavaran Also Added to the Green Mission Along with Syzygium palghatense, Syzygium chavaran was also planted. Both belong to the njaval (jamun) group. Both species are listed as highly endangered in Kerala. Elavally Panchayat: A Model for Biodiversity Conservation Elavally Panchayat is well known for its green initiatives. It has won the State Award for Best Pachathuruthu. It has also received the Kerala State Biodiversity Board award for conservation. This project adds more pride to the local community. It reflects Kerala’s commitment to nature protection at the grassroots level.
