Concept Note

Judiciary and the media play a crucial role in upholding democracy. Known as “the fourth estate,” media sensitizes the public, encourages freedom of expression, and checks the power of the government. As the mediator of justice, judiciary safeguards the constitution, impartially interprets the law, and protects individual rights. It upholds the rule of the law by ensuring the balance of power. The present climate is marked by attempts to politicize these institutions and attack their trustworthiness. Hence, an examination of these institutions is relevant in order to explore how judiciary and media can overcome these impediments to sustain and strengthen democracy across the world. The two-day national seminar
explores this contested terrain.
