Awareness Session Sheds Light on Legal Protections for Women by the Gender Club of St. Thomas College Thrissur (Autonomous)

On December 2nd, 2024, the Gender Club, in collaboration with the Women and Child Development Department of Kerala, conducted a significant awareness session at Menachery Hall focusing on critical legal frameworks protecting women’s rights.

The program commenced with the inaugural address by Rev Dr Martin K A, Principal of the institution, who emphasized the importance of understanding legal safeguards against gender-based discrimination and violence. The highlight of the event was an enlightening lecture delivered by Ms Aswathi P M, a Gender Specialist from SANKALP.

Ms Aswathi’s presentation comprehensively covered three pivotal legislative acts: the Prevention of Sexual Harassment (POSH) Act, the Domestic Violence (DV) Act, and the Dowry Prohibition Act. Her invigorating talk provided participants with critical insights into the legal mechanisms designed to protect women’s rights, prevent workplace harassment, address domestic violence, and eliminate the practice of dowry.

The awareness session successfully equipped attendees with knowledge about their legal rights and the institutional support available to combat gender-based injustices.

This collaborative effort between the Gender Club and the Women and Child Development Department underscores the commitment to promoting gender equality and legal awareness in Kerala.
