National Symposium on AMR Begins at St. Mary’s College Thrissur | MicroFrontiers 2025

MicroFrontiers 2025, a two-day National Symposium on Antimicrobial Resistance (AMR), concluded at St. Mary’s College (Autonomous), Thrissur. The event brought together more than 300 participants from Kerala and other major states. Students, researchers, and experts attended from Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, Maharashtra, and Uttar Pradesh.

A Strong Call for Action on AMR

During the inaugural session, Principal Dr. Sr. Meena K Cheruvathur delivered a powerful message on the urgency of AMR. She stated that AMR is an “immediate, life-or-death crisis.” She also stressed that AMR is a One Health challenge affecting humans, animals, and nature.

Insights from National Experts

The Chief Guest, Dr. A. M. Deshmukh, President of the Microbiologists Society India (MBSI), emphasised the value of academic-society collaboration. He noted that such partnerships are essential to improve national policies and research outcomes.

Faculty leaders also shared their views on the growing need for public awareness on AMR.

Event Highlights and Technical Sessions

The symposium followed the One Health framework and featured seven detailed technical sessions. These sessions were led by reputed resource persons from across the country.

Key themes included:

  • Clinical and Surveillance: Critical hospital interventions
  • Veterinary and Environmental Risks: Spread of resistance in veterinary care and aquaculture
  • Mechanisms and Genomics: Genomic mechanisms and Horizontal Gene Transfer
  • Future Innovations: New solutions beyond antibiotics, including peptide-based approaches

These sessions offered clear insights into the multi-sector challenges of AMR.

Strong Research Participation

Researchers from major universities, hospitals, and research centres took part. The event reinforced Kerala’s commitment to national scientific discussions.

Nearly 60 oral presentations were delivered by faculty, research scholars, and students. Their presentations covered emerging trends, innovative studies, and practical solutions related to AMR.

Kerala’s Pride in National AMR Dialogue

By hosting MicroFrontiers 2025, St. Mary’s College strengthened Kerala’s role in India’s AMR research efforts. The symposium also deepened academic collaboration and encouraged future joint projects.
