🐛 Capacity Building Programme on Sericulture and Silk Technology Held at St. Thomas College, Thrissur

🌟 Empowering Students with Skills in Silk Science

The Research and Post Graduate Department of Zoology at St. Thomas College (Autonomous), Thrissur organized an insightful Capacity Building Programme on Sericulture, Silk Mark & Silk Technology for undergraduate and postgraduate students. The event was held on 25th July 2025 at 2 PM in Menachery Hall of the college.

This programme was conducted as a pre-institution visit initiative to enhance students’ practical understanding of silk production and technology.

🎯 Event Highlights

• Over 80 UG and PG students actively participated in the event.
• The session was led by Mr. P.C. Johny, Senior Technical Officer and Silk Mark Executive, Central Silk Board, Palakkad.
• The program included:
  • An expert talk on Sericulture and Silk Technology
  • Live demonstrations
  • Engaging student activities
  • Interactive Q&A sessions

🎤 Inauguration and Leadership

• Dr. Binoy C.F. welcomed the participants.
• The session was inaugurated by Rev. Dr. Martin K.A., Principal of the college, who proudly showcased freshly hatched silk caterpillars during his inaugural address.
• He also distributed prizes to the winners of “The Silk Game” competition.

🏆 Student Competitions and Prizes

• The Silk Game Competition, designed to test student knowledge in silk-related topics, was a major attraction.
• Pulimoottil Silks, Thrissur, generously sponsored the prizes, adding a strong local industry connection.

👏 Student Participation and Closing Session

• Student representatives Chinmayi and Jithin led the feedback session, reflecting the enthusiasm and learnings of participants.
• Dr. Joyce Jose concluded the event with a heartfelt vote of thanks.

🧵 Kerala’s Youth Embracing the Future of Silk Industry

This event not only enriched students’ academic journey but also created awareness about the silk industry’s potential in Kerala. Programmes like these promote hands-on exposure and highlight opportunities in sustainable silk production, aligning with Kerala’s mission for skill-based education.
