Protective measures have been put in place near the Nelliyampathy Forest Range Office for Syzygium palghatense , popularly known as the Palakkadan Jamun. The programme was inaugurated by Nelliyampathy Deputy Range Officer Jayendran R. by planting saplings.
The conservation project is jointly implemented by St. Thomas College, Thrissur, the Kerala Forest Department, and the Kerala State Biodiversity Board. The project focuses on conserving the species in its natural habitat.
The Palakkadan Jamun is a rare and endangered plant species found only on the hillocks of Palakkad district. As it faces a high risk of extinction, its protection is considered very important. Several institutions and organisations are actively involved in efforts to conserve this species.
Forest officers from Nelliyampathy, MSc Botany students of St. Thomas College, and the project’s Principal Investigator, Dr. Anto P. V., participated in the conservation activities. The initiative also received strong support from Nenmara Divisional Forest Officer P. Praveen and Range Officer Sheriff C., which contributed to the successful implementation of the programme.
