Thrissur: A Step Toward Sustainable Farming Innovation

The Department of Botany, St. Thomas College (Autonomous), Thrissur, hosted an inspiring Hands-on Workshop on Mushroom Cultivation on 16 October 2025 at the Botany Lab.
The event was organized in association with the Innovation and Entrepreneurship Development Centre (IEDC) and the Institution’s Innovation Council (IIC) under the Ministry of Education’s Innovation Initiative.

Event Highlights

The workshop began with a prayer and a warm welcome by Dr. Geethu Elizabeth Thomas, Head of the Department of Botany.
Dr. Vimala Jose, Vice Principal, delivered the inaugural address, stressing the growing potential of mushroom cultivation as an eco-friendly and profitable venture in Kerala.
Mr. Sudheesh P. M., Project Officer, appreciated the department’s efforts to foster entrepreneurial learning and sustainable farming skills among students.

Expert Session on Mushroom Farming

The technical session was led by Mr. Rahul Govind, the Best Mushroom Farmer in Kerala (2025) and Founder of Monsoon Mushrooms.
He shared practical insights on:

  • Spawn preparation and substrate selection
  • Environmental requirements for optimal growth
  • Innovative cultivation techniques
  • Efficient harvesting and post-harvest handling

The session encouraged students to interact, ask questions, and understand the economic and practical aspects of mushroom farming.
Participants found the workshop both informative and motivating, as it highlighted new possibilities in Kerala’s agripreneurship sector.

Encouraging Innovation and Entrepreneurship

The event concluded with a vote of thanks by Dr. Anto P. V., Convenor, who expressed heartfelt gratitude to the resource person, faculty, and participants.
The workshop inspired students to take small yet innovative steps toward sustainable agriculture, aligning with Kerala’s growing focus on eco-innovation and green entrepreneurship.
As one student remarked, “It’s not just farming—it’s future learning.”
