Sustainable Heritage Tourism Campaign Conducted by St. Mary’s College Thrissur

Promoting sustainable tourism is essential for preserving Kerala’s rich cultural heritage. With this objective, the Department of Commerce, St. Mary’s College (Autonomous), Thrissur, organized a Sustainable Heritage Tourism Campaign for first-year B.Com students.

A total of 43 students actively participated in the programme. The campaign aimed to create awareness about the importance of protecting heritage sites through responsible tourism practices.

Students Visit Major Heritage Sites in Thrissur

As part of the campaign, students visited two well-known heritage destinations in Thrissur:

  • Shakthan Thampuran Palace
  • Thekkinkadu Maidan

During the field visit, students interacted with visitors and conducted a survey. They collected opinions and suggestions regarding sustainable heritage tourism and visitor facilities at these locations.

Survey Highlights: Visitors Demand Better Facilities

The survey revealed several valuable insights.

Most respondents suggested:

  • More waste bins across the heritage sites
  • Additional seating facilities for visitors
  • Improved cleanliness measures
  • Better visitor convenience and comfort

These suggestions highlight the need for stronger infrastructure support at heritage destinations. Moreover, they reflect the growing public interest in sustainable tourism practices.

Practical Learning Beyond the Classroom

The campaign offered students hands-on experience in:

  • Field-based research
  • Survey data collection
  • Public interaction
  • Tourism studies

As a result, students gained a deeper understanding of how sustainable tourism contributes to heritage conservation. They also learned the importance of civic responsibility and environmental awareness.

Faculty Coordination and Support

The field visit was coordinated by Ms. Anjani Antony, Programme Coordinator, Department of Commerce.

The students were accompanied by Ms. Himaprabha P., faculty member of the Department of Commerce.

Their guidance ensured the successful execution of the programme.

A Proud Initiative from Thrissur
